“Whether the cloud stayed above the Tabernacle for two days, a month, or a year, the people of Israel stayed in camp and did not move on. But as soon as it lifted, they broke camp and moved on. So they camped or traveled at the LORD ’s command, and they did whatever the LORD told them through Moses.”  Numbers 9:22-23   NLT

An uplifted hand and promise of a forthcoming treat can usually get Famous to stay on command. Rather than pulling him through the aisles of the pet store with tasty treats in open bins tempting him, I simply tell him to sit and stay at the checkout counter where he remains until I return with a cart full of merchandise. Then upon my command he joins me at the counter for his reward and the opportunity to beg a second treat from the store clerk.

The fiery cloud that led Moses and the Israelites through the wilderness of the Sinai appeared as a cloud over the Tabernacle during the day and as a pillar of fire at night. It was God’s way of leading his people and assuring them of his presence. But for us today it reminds us God still gives directions in our lives. There are times of rest and settling when we need to continue serving God in the place where He has placed us. But we must be vigilant for when He asks us to uproot ourselves and trust him to help us make changes for ourselves and for others.

Teach me, Lord, the divine gift of expectant patience.
