“’LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.’ We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.”  Psalm 39:4-7  NLT

You might think having a dog and knowing the span of his lifetime would in comparison make your own lifetime seem almost endless. But for me, seeing Famous grow from a puppy to a middle-aged dog over the course of a few years reminds me of the limits placed on me by my Creator. I am reminded daily to appreciate life and at least try to make it a day worthy of being a pet owner. Each walk, each belly rub, and every jump into my lap becomes a celebration.

If I am capable of learning from this relationship, if any of us are smart enough to learn from our successes and failures in life, then life can be a series of joys even through the most difficult of days. We step from one moment to the next realizing our paths will one day end. And when they do, we should know in our hearts that they have led us home.

This is a day, one of a finite number, which can allow me to experience the joy of the journey with Christ.
