“If, however, the mark breaks out again in the house after he has torn out the stones and scraped the house, and after it has been replastered, then the priest shall come in and make an inspection. If he sees that the mark has indeed spread in the house, it is a malignant mark in the house; it is unclean.…”  Leviticus 14:43-44  NASB

“Unclean, unclean!” If you are a dog owner and you own glass storm doors, then you know the plague upon your house is dog slobber! You can scrub the glass every week, but as soon as a squirrel or cat is spotted by the waiting pooch, and the barking commences and the nose is pressed up to the glass in anticipation of being set free to the outdoors, then deposits of slimy, cloudy wetness begin to accumulate on the glass about a foot off of the ground. It is the clear sign of a house pet, and it could serve as a warning to any postal carrier or would-be thief that there is an animal present.

Like the door which has to be cleaned so that there is a clear and unobstructed view to the world beyond, our lives have to be cleansed from the sins which we repeatedly commit despite our faith in Christ. Christ’s death on the cross marked the end of slavery to sin and the consequence of eternal death, but as imperfect creations we still must ask forgiveness for our shortcomings each day when we have forgotten to place Christ on the throne of our hearts. He is ready to forgive and offer to you a clean heart.

Show me the way to seek Your forgiveness and the renewal of Your Spirit today, dear Lord.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”  Proverbs 3:5-6  NIV

When walking a dog on a lead, particularly one that retracts, you have to be aware of vertical obstacles that might hinder your path. Anything stationary over three feet high such as a tree, light post, or street sign presents a problem if dog and master choose separate sides. Famous has become accustomed to this challenge and will normally choose a path to avoid tying up his lead. Smart dog!

But this morning he became very interested in a scent which took him up a neighbor’s sidewalk and behind a dogwood tree. Rather than back-tracking and preventing a tie-up with the tree, he looked back at me as if to say, “There’s a problem here. Why don’t you step through the wet grass and come around the tree and fix it?” So I laughed and obliged him.

God will not lead us on paths that will tie us up although they might challenge us. If we seek to know where God is leading us rather than only where we think is best, our paths will ultimately become clear.

Give me wisdom today to see the path You have set before me.

“Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.”  Psalm 119:97  ESV

One of the rules of owning a spaniel is sufficient grooming. Ideally, I should brush or comb Famous’ ears every day. But he also has fine feathering which is prone to tangles around his elbows and hips. If these areas do not get special attention, the knots that form must eventually be cut out. When done correctly, his coat becomes a shining, tasseled skirt that gives his gait movement and grace.

He is a patient dog when it comes to grooming. He lets me perform the ritual of brushing his ears, trying not to pull too hard through the snags, until they are soft and smooth. It usually only takes a few minutes, and even though I have to stop everything else on my agenda, it has become a tender and enjoyable practice.

Our communication with God also requires practice. Only in seeking God in quiet, intentional prayer or meditation can we hope to create the room in our hearts to listen, obey, and enjoy his law. Otherwise, the busy agendas, the earthly distractions, and the evil pursuits of this life will leave us in a tangled mess!

Grant me the steady patience of creating moments today given only unto You, my God.

“So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can.  And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.”  Ecclesiastes 3:12-13  NLT

Famous helped me to officially open the summer grilling season tonight as we dined outside enjoying a warm evening with a light breeze. Of course, he was the one showing all the jubilation with his barking and running back and forth from the kitchen through the screen door to the deck and back again. He can really put on a show! With his bowls carried outside next to my table we enjoyed a grilled T-bone steak (his pieces were mixed into his dry food), and I surrounded mine with grilled corn and summer vegetables. But I  also understand the joy of celebrating his life and the bounty of gifting God has shown me through him.

God certainly intends for us to be blessed by him in this life. He wants goodness and joy to accompany us through our years. In their absence, He has also provided the hope and promise of a greater eternal life yet to come. But we should not live in idolatrous worship of “the good life.” God’s blessings equip us to share his love with those whose lives need his hope and assurance and blessing.

I celebrate the gift of life, the joy of expectancy, and the duty to instill in others the generosity of God’s love.

“So Jacob’s sons arrived in Egypt along with others to buy food, for the famine was in Canaan as well. Since Joseph was governor of all Egypt and in charge of selling grain to all the people, it was to him that his brothers came. When they arrived, they bowed before him with their faces to the ground. Joseph recognized his brothers instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where are you from?” he demanded. “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We have come to buy food.” Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they didn’t recognize him.”  Genesis 42: 5 – 8  NLT

Having lived in only one neighborhood as Famous has grown up with me, I wonder about people who may have observed us from a distance, people who might have spotted us on the sidewalks over the years and noted our progression from half-marathon runner with his pup-pup by his side to slowing guy with older dog by his side. I wonder if they took any notice of this handsome guy (and his master) as they began to transform together with age. I wonder if we ever became a familiar sight to anyone.

God never loses track of his children though they may change drastically. He sees only the souls inside.

Teach me today, Lord, to recognize those near me who share a faith in You.

“Then God said, ‘Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.’ And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens.”  Genesis 1:6-7  NLT

Both Famous and I were very happy to walk outside this afternoon. Rains, storms, and damaging winds had kept us waterlogged throughout the week. Water poured down from the heavens and gathered in puddles on the road and on top of the saturated ground. Between the flood from above and the flood from below, it was difficult to keep paws and shoes dry. With the return of blue sky I could see a difference in his eagerness to cover more territory and to garner more scents.

Perhaps part of the Christian’s journey through the storms and hardships of life is to emerge on the other side with joy, with wisdom of the understanding that our God has delivered us. We must rely upon God to show us the path of goodness which leads us away from the floods of evil.

Give me the strength in today’s storms to find Your deliverance to the dry and peaceful shore.

“So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”  II Corinthians 5:16-17  NLT

I love looking for new things in Famous–his reaction to a new dog, his sudden excitement over a favorite treat, and even his everyday discovery of new scents along our walks. He helps me to become a better explorer and uncover joy in the most mundane routines.

In some ways I have stopped seeing things from only a human point of view. When we are hiking together, I let him show me the direction of the wind, the freshest of bird droppings on the ground, or the eyes of a woodland creature at night. He has made me a person with new experiences and new insights that had eluded me before he came into my life. He helped me become a new and better person.
New life is the hallmark of a Christian life. We see and experience things differently because we understand Christ in a new light. We are new people in a way, because we understand the new significance of our lives and how God can use us for great purposes. We no longer desire to serve ourselves, but to serve our God and King.

Create in me a new heart with new ears to hear Your call, new eyes to see Your truth, and a new voice to proclaim Your Good News.

“Others were responsible for the furnishings, the items in the sanctuary, and the supplies, such as choice flour, wine, olive oil, frankincense, and spices. But it was the priests who blended the spices.”  I Chronicles 9:29-30  NLT

This morning our walk was filled with amazing fragrances! The overnight storms had left a heavy vapor over the earth, and the air was perfumed with the scents of rose, honeysuckle, and cedar, not to mention a tangy, lemon aroma. Famous must have found them even more enticing than I. If that impressed upon him where he belongs, his home, a place of sweet beauty, then I have to believe he could find his way home from anywhere!

So important was the scent from the spices used in worship that only the priest could mix them! They were used to evoke emotion and memory and to transport the worshipper to a place far different from the everyday world. The Temple was a place set apart from the rest of the world where the created could meet their Creator. It is this refuge that we can find everyday no matter where we are.

Surround me with Your marvelous Presence, O Lord, and lead me home to Your sanctuary of peace.
