“Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.” Psalm 119:34-35 NLT
There’s a new girl in town. Her name is Lulu. When Famous and I meet her when we are walking, she races around us, encircling us in her leash. Now that they have met, Famous “puts up” with her energy but does not follow her lead. He would rather move along and make his own discoveries. She is adorable, and the neighbors have become used to getting tangled up in her dog lead. I am told, “She’s really very smart,” by her master. But we both know that repetition is the best way to help a dog learn to obey.
God is patient with us, showing us over and over again the way to happiness. Most of us do not “get it” right away. We are tempted to believe there is a better way than God’s commands, that we know better than our Creator. But inevitably we will become tangled up in our own methods.
Help me avoid the folly of trusting myself more than You, O Lord.
