“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”  I Thessalonians 5:16-18  NLT

Today was an ordinary day without fanfare or drama, but I was excited and celebrating anyway. My joy came from having a low-key day at home with Famous after a worrisome day with him having six teeth extracted due to his extensive periodontal disease. My experience of having four impacted wisdom teeth extracted a couple of decades ago only led to my concerns. Then when I heard that two of his teeth had to be “drilled out”, I truly had speculated he would have a difficult time in his recovery.

To my delight and joy he seemed to do well even the next day with minimal signs of any discomfort. A low dose of pain medication prescribed by his veterinarian made him comfortable enough to take his regular walks with ease and equal enthusiasm. And his appetite returned almost immediately! He still has to finish his course of antibiotics and be mindful of sutures in his mouth, but we have made it through the first twenty-four hours with unexpected ease.
Today gave me plenty of moments for gratitude. This is the response we should all nurture in our hearts–being thankful in all things. We should find the things in life which we know to be gifts from God and celebrate them. Circumstances change from day to day, but the love of God remains constant even we find it difficult to understand or accept them. In Christ, God has given us the opportunity for eternal joy, and He is pleased when we devote ourselves to living and sharing our faith in him.

Today I will stop to open my heart to gratitude.

“He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”  Daniel 2:21  NIV

I am trying to catalog in my mind the simple memories Famous has been making with me. In just a simple walk there are many sensations which are eternal. Spring gives us a shower of cherry blossoms. Summer supplies the wet slap of feet and paws in the ocean. Winter challenges us with an occasional slippery slide or the crunch of fallen snow giving way under our weight. And autumn sweeps a little hurricane of leaves across our path that rustles wistfully, reminding us that the only thing which is constant is change.

But God is also constant, giving us the hope that these moments are eternal because He has created them, and He has directed them to change. Today is the moment He has created for us. It will soon change, and as it does, we can watch and listen to his unfolding miracle.

What eternal memory will You give to me today, O God?

“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”  I Thessalonians 5:11  NLT

Taking a walk with Famous can sometimes be as much an adventure for me as it is for him. Today, a car sent out a friendly toot as he and I were heading down the sidewalk. I thought it appeared to be a neighbor driving by so I quickly waved. A few short moments later the same car came by us, turned the corner, and then stopped. Out jumped a friend whom Famous and I had not seen in a long time.

We greeted each other with a warm hug. Famous appeared to recognize him as well and eagerly sat down with tail wagging, ready for his chance to say hello and get a pat on the head. My friend and I quickly caught each other up on recent events. But we also blessed each other by sharing the good news of what God had been doing in our lives.

We may forget our role as encouragers to others if we are tempted to dwell on our own needs. Let us never forget that words of kindness are a ministry to both those who know and those who seek the Lord.

Open my heart and ears to those to whom God would have me encourage with kind words today.

“If sometimes the cloud remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning, they would move out; or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out.”  Numbers 9:21  NLT

The cloud did remain this morning. The cloud over our heads on this day, however, was the result of tropical moisture that had settled over our region. The light arrived later than usual and filtered through the dense cloud layer as a quiet gray. Most of yesterday’s winds had died, so it was apparent the heaviness and dampness of the morning would linger throughout most of the day. Nonetheless, it was a good morning to sit with Famous (and a cup of coffee) to see how the weather God had sent to us would affect our plans.

Where do we turn for direction? Is it our work, our bank accounts, or friends, or the ones we love? If we pray for guidance from God, he will show us the path to take. God will intervene to further his plan of salvation for the world. We must be willing to serve him in this ultimate glory so that its impact will be realized in our daily living.

May the wonders of Your glory be my strongest influence today.

In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” And immediately the fig tree withered up.  The disciples were amazed when they saw this and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”  Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen.  You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”  Matthew 21:18-22  NLT

Famous has faith that he shall be fed. If his evening meal has not been satisfying, he will stand in the middle of the kitchen floor and bark repeatedly until I have given him a second helping. We have both been cutting back on portions lately, and at times he must feel he is getting the short end of the straw. But he has learned to ask the one who supplies his food, and he shall receive.

Jesus has amazed us in giving the instruction that if we but have faith, we can receive anything. Anything! But I believe we are prone to dismiss this as hyperbole. Our prayer lives have become scant acknowledgements that God will hear our requests. Otherwise, our days would be spent in meditation and praise, and our houses of worship would always be full.
I believe there is great power in prayer which can bring exactly what we need, be it healing, comfort, peace of mind, and even daily provisions. But that can only come when we have the faith to acknowledge that it is God Almighty which delivers these blessings because He has heard our prayers and seen our faith.

Today I will be bold in prayer and strong in faith.

“But then I recall all you have done, O LORD; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.”  Psalm 77:11  NLT

The autumn brings new opportunity for finding fun things to do with Famous. This month I plan to take Famous on a mountain hike, stand with him in a pumpkin patch, and sit and watch fireworks one evening at the end of the county fair. I am storing up memories with Famous. He is my gift, one which comes with responsibility. I choose to be faithful to this gift and to honor God, the Giver of all good gifts. My hope and trust is that these memories will turn into blessings even after Famous is no longer by my side. He points me back to the One who so loves me, and he will continue to remind me of that love once he is gone.

God bestowed upon us the gift of memory. This is one way in which we can draw closer to Him. Our memories of his presence, his intervention, his providence, and his grace, result in our natural responses of praise, thanksgiving, and adoration.

Preserve and protect the memories You have given to me, Father, of my journey that continues to lead me closer to You.

About this time, a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River. The baby’s sister then stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him. Soon Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river, and her attendants walked along the riverbank. When the princess saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it for her. When the princess opened it, she saw the baby. The little boy was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This must be one of the Hebrew children,” she said. Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked. “Yes, do!” the princess replied. So the girl went and called the baby’s mother. “Take this baby and nurse him for me,” the princess told the baby’s mother. “I will pay you for your help.” So the woman took her baby home and nursed him.  Later, when the boy was older, his mother brought him back to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her own son. The princess named him Moses, for she explained, “I lifted him out of the water.”  Exodus 2:1-10  NLT

The first crisp air of the fall greeted us this morning. I begrudgingly put on jeans and a light jacket noting I had not been this cold in a long time. Famous, however, seemed to be excited about the chill. If you are a fan of “sweater weather,” then you will understand he is too, since he has to wear his sweater year round.

But the afternoon was warmer and afforded great conditions for a long walk in a nearby park. As we crossed a wide grassy meadow, Famous seemed to just sail along through the grass, his long coat making him move like a schooner on the water. He no longer had to trudge through the heat of the hot summer sun. I mused he would have been a happy dog to have been raised on a large farm or estate, free to roam the grounds everyday. But he became my dog, and I became responsible for raising him and providing a home and care. He may not have chosen his fate, but he liberated me from a quieter and lonelier home, so his presence has always been seen as God-sent.

When today does not make sense to me, when I wonder how I ended up with everything seemingly working against me, show me, dear Lord, that You care and have provided for me long before I knew You.

Then he left and went to the home of Titius Justus, a Gentile who worshiped God and lived next door to the synagogue. Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also heard Paul, became believers, and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him, “Don’t be afraid! Speak out! Don’t be silent!”  Acts 18:7-9  NLT

Famous and I said good-bye to our next-door neighbors this weekend as they moved to another home in town. For several years they had been wonderful people to have living beside us. They had their own menagerie of cats and dogs, so we often passed them when we would take our walks. But they were especially kind to Famous and often looked after him when I had to take a trip out-of-town.

On the day of the big move we passed them early in the morning as they began the packing. They were preparing for hired movers to assist them, so I assumed they would be in and out all day. But they were not! Once the movers arrived I failed to see them return to the house, and I was fearful to have missed the opportunity of telling them one last time how much they would be missed. They did return the next day to gather smaller items (and cats) which they had not taken for the first night. It was then Famous and I hurried over so as to catch them and wish them well. They kindly said they would continue to help with Famous if I ever needed them, but I was already acutely aware of how much I would miss our frequent conversations and stories.
Even when we live according to God’s Word, there are times when we cannot see the fruits of our labors. In fact, because we often measure outcomes by our own eyes, we miss the miracle of the Holy Spirit empowering the faithful to work together for the Kingdom. We should never doubt that the good we perform in simple daily tasks is being multiplied by God. We should seize every opportunity to share our hearts, appreciating the fact it might be our only opportunity.

Direct my feet not to stumble or hesitate today, God, when I hear Your directions.

“For God, who said, ‘Let there be light in the darkness,’ has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.”  II Corinthians 4:6  NLT

It is the time of year when daytime and nighttime temperatures fluctuate quickly. This evening we headed out for a walk with a beautiful sunset for a backdrop. By the time we had walked around the schoolyard the light was fading when we turned to head home and the air was cooling. Famous led us close to a southernly exposed brick wall of the school, and you could feel the radiant heat from the bricks, evidence they had been baking in the sun for hours during the day.

We need only look for evidence that the Lord has been with us in this place. Out of the void God spoke and evoked the light in the beginning of all creation. This was his “Word,” his logos, which became flesh in Christ Jesus and which continues to go forth into the world through our hearts.

Enable my senses to find evidence of Your presence in my life today, dear Father.

“Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served the Lord by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.

One night Eli, who was almost blind by now, had gone to bed. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle[a] near the Ark of God. Suddenly the Lord called out, “Samuel!”

“Yes?” Samuel replied. “What is it?” He got up and ran to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”

“I didn’t call you,” Eli replied. “Go back to bed.” So he did.

Then the Lord called out again, “Samuel!”

Again Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”

“I didn’t call you, my son,” Eli said. “Go back to bed.”

Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before. So the Lord called a third time, and once more Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”

Then Eli realized it was the Lord who was calling the boy. So he said to Samuel, “Go and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went back to bed.

And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!”

And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”  I Samuel 3:1-10  NLT

Poor Famous! An intestinal infection kept him under the weather with loss of appetite all week. Instinctively, he refused to eat. But even that did not stop his urgency to quickly get outside when he could not control  his bowel. Careful monitoring of him and his mood, appetite, and urges became my main focus. If we did not make it outside in time, he sadly waited until I realized that he and the living room floor needed cleaning. During the daytime I learned to watch for any sign that he needed to quickly be taken outside, whether it was a short whimper, heading to the front door, or just standing and staring at me hoping I would see him in time.

At night this become a more difficult problem. His whimper could not always arouse me from sleep, so he would relieve himself when and where he could. I would usually awaken to the foul smell from the midst of my slumber and instantly realize Famous needed my help.

After the second night, with the realization the problem was not going to be solved quickly, I made a decision to sleep on the living room sofa with my clothes on ready to walk outside with him in a moment’s notice. Then if he called to me in distress, I was ready to respond once I could focus on the room and where my shoes were laid! This proved to be a satisfactory method but one which deprived me of my sleep just as had been the case the summer I was house training him. At that time he would sleep in his crate close to my bed. At the first sound of any whimper, I would show him outside where it was appropriate to relieve himself.

Today Famous showed the first signs of improved energy and appetite. His urgent needs have also improved. Our solution depended on my willingness to respond quickly to his call for help. But how often do we delay our responses to God, either convincing ourselves we need to think about his call or ignoring it all together? God will, I believe, continue to call us to the purposes for which we are created. The problem in delaying the   response is that we will miss unique opportunities to serve and understand God’s will. We should become quick and obedient servants waiting for the Master’s call, even if it means sleeping in our clothes and being ready in a moment’s notice.

Help me not to stumble in my conviction to follow Your direction today, O Lord.
